Generations, a much-loved South African soap opera, started airing on SABC 1 in 1993. It was the brainchild of Mfundi Vundla and was shown every weekday at 20:00 UTC+2 (South African Standard Time) on SABC 1. The storyline unfolded in the advertising industry, showcasing the journeys of South Africans as they pursued their dreams for a brighter future.

The show gained widespread acclaim and remained one of the most-watched local TV programs for a significant period. However, on August 11, 2014, production came to a sudden stop. Why? Well, 16 main actors decided to halt filming due to wage disputes, a substantial R500 million reduction in royalties, and the unwelcome proposal of signing three-year extended contracts.

Following this standoff, from September 30, 2014, to November 30, 2014, the series went on a well-publicized break. The 16 actors at the center of the controversy were let go on August 18, 2014, after a week-long strike. Fans were urged to show solidarity by boycotting the show. Surprisingly, instead of declining, viewership increased from the usual seven million to a whopping 10 million nightly viewers before the actors were released.

Generations returned on December 1, 2014, with a new name, “Generations: The Legacy.” Some familiar faces made a comeback, including Connie Ferguson, Rapulana Seiphemo, Musa Ngema, and Asanda Foji.
